Spring Cleaning With Essential Oils

spring clean

Well, spring is right around the corner. Time to think about Spring Cleaning! One of our favorite things to do! Right!! Well,  I have  always loved spring and the weather it brings; and as much as I dread it I do love the smell and look my house has with a good old fashioned spring cleaning. One of the many things I love about using doTERRA  essential oils is the ability to use natural products to clean my home. I am going to share a few tips and DIY items for your consideration over the next several days. Happy Cleaning!

Did you know that Americans spend over 5 billion dollars a year on cleaning products, with the average household spending close to $700 dollars a year on just cleaning supplies alone. According to this Web MD article¬†¬†‚ÄúThese products [antibacterials and harsh cleansers] don‚Äôt work any better than their natural or non-toxic counterparts, and they damage the environment and potentially place our long-term health at risk.‚ÄĚ

To make your household safer, get rid of the risk of household cleansers by making your own  at home. They are affordable, easy to make , eco-friendly, and just as effective (if not more) than store bought cleaners. Make sure to check back over the next few days for more ways to make your own cleaning supplies at home and get some tips for cleaning with oils.

  • 1 3/4 cups ¬†distilled water
  • 30 drops dŇćTERRA essential oil (see suggestions below)

Essential oils to try:

A combination of any of the above essential oils would work great. Experiment and find what works best for you.

Some recommended combinations include:

  1. 15 drops each of Lavender and Lemon
  2. 10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Wild Orange
  3. 30 drops On Guard blend
  4. 15 drops each of Grapefruit and On Guard

Add all ingredients to spray bottle. Shake thoroughly.

The next time you clean your bathroom, I recommend mixing up an effective cleaner with many ingredients you already have at home. I won’t promise that it will become your ¬†favorite household chore, but you will at least have a clean bathroom, clear lungs, and non-toxic cleaning products to make this job a little easier to handle

Soft Scrub for Bath, Tile, and Toilet

Make this in small batches and store in an airtight container. This recipe  is enough for two to four applications. This soft scrub is excellent for getting rid of soap scum, removing stains, and brightening your tile and toilet. To use, just apply and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then scrub. Once done scrubbing, take a wet cloth and wipe clean.

What you Need:

  • 3/4 rounded cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap ***
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 5-10 drops dŇćTERRA Lemon essential oil

***Liquid castile soap is a vegetable-based soap commonly found in health food stores and I get mine at Target. Dr. Bronner’s is a popular one. Look for unscented. This scrub is also great to use to help clean your kitchen sink, refrigerator, or tile floor .

dr b soap

  1. In a bowl, combine the baking soda and castile soap.
  2. Add the water and stir.
  3. Add the vinegar and essential oil. The consistency should be a soft paste.
  4. Store in an airtight container.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops dŇćTERRA¬†Melaleuca essential oil
  • 1/4 cup vinegar

Add ingredients directly to a partially drained bowl. As it reacts, scrub the toilet. This combination is intended for one use at a time.

I am going to end this day one of Spring Cleaning with a microwave cleaning tip. This will be your AFTER picture.

This microwave trick is noting short of amazing. You are not going to believe how well it works! Basically, it  simply steams up the microwave, loosens up the yuckiness and makes it extremely  easy to wipe down.  TRY IT!!  You will be amazed.  I simply can not stand a dirty microwave, so I do this often! I just like the smell it gives the kitchen too. So, here ya go.

  1. Fill a microwave safe bowl with water.
  2. Add 4 to 5 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (Or Citrus Bliss)
  3. Microwave for 5 or so minutes.
  4. Wipe your microwave down with a clean cloth

Not only is your microwave steam cleaned, it smells GREAT too.

Happy Oiling and let me know how these work for you.

But, I am here to tell you all about the benefits of Deep Blue! Deep Blue is a go to product here. My husband keeps this in his truck and in his golf bag. He swears by it!! However, I am going to issue a word of WARNING! Deep Blue eases discomfort of sore muscles and is amazing. However, it is like other blends you put on sore muscles and you need to wash your hands immediately after use prior to your hand touching any other part of your body. My husband, Jeff, decided to use some on his knee that was causing him great pain. BUT, he for some strange reason, decide to take a shower immediately after rubbing this on his knee. In just a few moments I heard sounds coming out of the shower that did not resemble human speech. I went running into the bathroom and he was moving and levitating in ways no 56 year old man should or can move. Turns out he DID NOT wash his hands first, had grabbed the soap and was soaping up all his “manly parts”. Now, I wish I could tell you I helped him, but I was far to busy laughing till I cried. After a few moments all was well, but, he will never do that again. He is a walking (or floating PSA) to never forget to wash your hands after using Deep Blue.

SO, in all seriousness, here is some information on Deep Blue

Deep Blue¬†is a proprietary blend ¬†that works together to provide instant relief for tired, sore ¬†muscles and joints.¬† The properties of the oils¬†bring cooling relief to areas of discomfort.¬† Just two or three drops of this amazing blend of oils ‚ÄĒ or a small dab of Deep Blue Lotion¬†is all you need to energize your daily work out or simply restore ease to your daily routine.

Recent studies indicate that more than half of us suffer from on-going discomfort, ON A DAILY BASIS.  But, mother nature has some of the most natural products that can safely and effectively use to soothe achy muscles and joints and they offer penetrating and sustained relief from this discomfort.

What Oils Are Used In Deep Blue?

Deep Blue Rub from doTERRA  db

dep blue

Several powerfully soothing oils make up this  blend. These oils include:

Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum)
Blue chamomile
Helichrysum and

Simply apply two to three drops of Deep Blue oil or lotion directly to areas of discomfort. Its cooling  benefit will be felt almost immediately.

With close to 5 mL of dŇćTERRA’s top-selling Deep Blue oil blend in each tube, it is an essential addition to your bathroom cabinet, gym bag or first aid kit. We have them in all of those places. I gave some to my parent’s and my aunt. I have some of the sample packets that I give out all the time. Everyone I have given these too all in love with this product.

Deep Blue Rub is blended in a base of moisturizing emollients that  will leave your skin feeling soft, not greasy and is the choice of many massage therapists and sports practitioners.

I suggest you get some of this for your home. You will not regret it. Just remember my husband’s Public Service Announcement ūüėČ Let me help you get this free during the month of March.

Happy Oiling,

Using Essential Oils Safely

oil safe

Using dŇćTERRA¬†essential oils have ¬†provided amazing benefits for my familys and friends. When people try them for the first time ¬†I have found that they ALWAYS go into this skeptical, but they return AMAZED at the benefits they are now experiencing. I love ¬†that I am providing natural solutions to concerns or ways to make my home a place with less chemicals (cleaning products) for ¬†my family.

DISCLAIMER:  The information contained on this website is for informational purposes only.  The contents are not intended to provide a professional medical diagnosis, opinion or to recommend any particular course of treatment

As you begin to use essential oils you need to take the following precautions.

  • Keep oils out of the reach of children.
  • Use only 100% Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils.
  • Follow all label warnings and instructions.
  • Essential oils should not be used in the eyes, on open wounds or in the ear canal
  • Keep essential oils away from the eyes. ¬†After applying oils, keep hands away from eyes.
  • Dilute oils when using on infants, young children and those with sensitive skin.
  • Do not use on a child‚Äôs hands as they may transfer oils to the eyes, additionally, cover a baby’s feet with socks after applying oils so they will not put their feet into their mouth.
  • Some oils are ‚Äúhot‚ÄĚ such as cassia, cinnamon and oregano. ¬†Always use caution and dilute.
  • Many essential oils are just as effective when diluted down to 5%. I have a previous post about carrier oils and dilutions you can read.
  • If redness or irritation occurs when using topically, apply vegetable oil (olive, coconut or almond oil, etc) to the affected area.
  • Do NOT consume an essential oil internally unless the product is FDA approved as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). Many doTERRA oils may be used internally. Look at the bottle for this information¬†if you ¬†are not sure.
  • Avoid the sun after using citrus oils which cause sun sensitivity.
  • Consult with your physician before using essential oils, ¬†particularly if you are pregnant or under a doctor‚Äôs care.
  • If pregnant, avoid most essential oils without doing further research.
  • Do your research if you even if you are not pregnant. ¬†ūüėČ Empower yourself!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Carrier Oils- Everything you wanted to know!

When you use an oil topically, you can use them neat (no dilution except for sensitive skin or with hot oils) and/or you can dilute with a carrier oil. You can also dilute any oil you that want to make it spread easier. I make lots of roller ball recipes to use at home.

What is a carrier oil? A carrier oil is named such because they “carry” an essential oi to the skin. Carrier oils refer to base oils that are used to dilute essential oils before applying them directly to your skin. Carrier oils are usually cold-pressed oils that are produced from fatty portions of a specific plant

Why use a carrier oil? ¬†Carrier oils are used for so many reasons. ¬†You might use a carrier oil in order to help you cover a large part of the body. ¬†For example, if you are massaging your ¬†legs, ¬†you could add a few drops of ¬†essential oil to the carrier oil in order to apply to the entire area easier. ¬†Carrier oils are also used as a safety precaution they are very powerful. ¬†When using EOs on someone with skin sensitivity or an infant or child, it is “essential” ¬†to dilute them. ¬†Carrier oils are also used tohelp the oils absorb more rapidly into the skin.

Some carrier oils  and some info on the oils are outlined below.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • Light
  • Doesn’t go rancid
  • Leaves no residue
  • Good for all skin types

Almond Oil

  • Soothes dry, irritated skin
  • Slightly Oily
  • Good for beauty and health recipes

Grapeseed Oil

  • Good for delicate skin types
  • Commonly used in cosmetics for its many benefits
  • Relatively odorless

Jojoba Oil

  • Closely resembles natural oils of skin
  • Waxy and relatively expensive
  • Non-greasy feelings
  • Relatively Odorless

Olive Oil

  • High in vitamin and mineral count
  • Excellent for hair
  • Heavy and oily
  • Strong Odor

Oils to Dilute

Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Oregano Thyme, and the followings need to be diluted for sensitive  skins, Bergamont, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Geranium Ginger, Lemongrass, Lime, Peppermint, and Wintergreen

Suggested Dilutions  or how much carrier oil do I need to use?  This all depends on your purpose.  I’ve read lots of research that indicates that an essential oil maintains its therapeutic benefits even when diluted down to 2%, 5%, or 10%.   The Modern Essentials guide to essential oils has a great chart that shows dilution ratios.  These are very  light dilutions.  Remember, it’s o.k. to dilute at a much heavier ratio.  In fact, it can be safer and more effective.  I say….dilute!

Infants are not listed on the chart but it is recommended that one drop of essential per Tablespoon of carrier be used.

Here is another chart with heavier dilutions.

Here is a link to a chart that shows some of the oils and how they are used.

What happens if I burn myself or get an EO in my eye?  Use your carrier oil.  If you apply an oil and it starts to tingle, just add  ;ittle carrier oil.  You will find that it immediately takes away the tingle or burn.   If an oil gets in the eye, you can also use your carrier oil around the eye area.   I speak from experience, it helps.   Trust me, my grandson got some in his eye!! Not fun, but this worked. DO NOT USE WATER!!!!!!  Diluting or trying to wash off an oil with water will not work.   Water will only drive it in further as oil and water and oils do not mix.

So, there you have it.  Everything you wanted to know about carrier oils but were afraid to ask.

Do you use a carrier oil?  Tell me, what is your favorite?

Time is running out! Get $100 in free oils!

Using essential oils have impacted my life in such a positive way. If you have been wanting to try oils, NOW IS THE TIME. I use them to soothe minor skin irritations, to ease occasional indigestion or nausea. They promote respiratory  health (my son swears by this one) and use them as a powerful cleansing agent. I could go on and one and if you join my team, I will provide regular training information on all these oils are GREAT for.

I will be here to provide training to you and if you sign up for the Home Essentials Kit or above I will also provide you with a Modern Essentials Book. This book I have found to be “essential” in the many ways to use essential oils for my families’ well being.

Diaperbag Makeover with dŇćTERRA Essential Oils

diaper 2

I am a Nanna to 4 beautiful grandchildren (soon to be 5 in September) so this is a topic near and dear to my heart. How wonderful to have a choice of natural products to use on your baby. I am including a link to the¬† dŇćTERRA page for your review.

There are recipies for three items to use at home and in your diaper bag for your baby or grandbaby.

  1. Diaper Cream –¬†This ¬†recipe is free from petroleum and artificial ingredients that can further irritate skin. –
  2. Talc Free Baby Powder РYour baby’s skin is delicate and very sensitive to chemicals that could be irritating. This safe and effective talc-free baby powder will make your baby’s skin soft, dry, and smooth.
  3. Homemade Baby Wipes  РCommercial wipes are made with ingredients that can irritate a baby’s delicate skin. This easy recipe is great on the go, just place wipes in a wet bag

Homemade Diaper Cream:

What You Need:

  • 1/2 ounce bees wax
  • 3 1/2 ounce Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 2 drops each: doTERRA’s Melaleuca Essential Oil and Lavender Essential Oil
  • (1) 4 ounce glass jar – (Tip: Use a Baby Food Jar!)
  • Spoon or stick for stirring ( I found that¬† a popsicle or craft stick is best)

  1. Put the beeswax into the glass jar and place in the top portion of a double boiler. Gently melt it over simmering water, stirring until smooth.
  2. Slowly add the Fractionated Coconut Oil
  3. Remove from heat and add essential oil. Stir, then let cool.
  4. Label your cream and done!
  5. Tip: If it’s too firm, reheat and add more fractionated coconut oil.

  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 cup Arrowroot powder
  • 1 drop Roman Chamomile essential oil
  • 1-2 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 1/4 cup finely ground oats

Note: You can find Arrowroot powder at most health food stores.

  1. Mix well and put in a shaker style bottle.
  2. Tip: Use an empty spice jar with a sifter lid.
  3. If you don‚Äôt have finely ground oats, combine ingredients in a blender and pulse until finely ground. –

baby wipes

What You Need:

  • 1 roll premium paper towels
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Melaleuca essential oil
  • An airtight storage container/empty wipe container/wet bag

Note: Use cloth for reusable wipes.

  1. Cut paper towel roll in half with a serrated or electric knife. Use half the roll now, and half later.
  2. Combine water, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and essential oils in a small bowl.
  3. Pour the mixture over the paper towels and then cover with the airtight lid letting the mixture absorb for 10 minutes.
  4.  Turn the container over and let sit for another 10 minutes.
  5. Remove and discard the cardboard middle. Just pull the wipes from the center when you are ready to use. Store in container of your choice.

Here is the pdf for this information.¬†¬†The link ¬†has information about what¬†to do when having a dŇćTERRA themed baby shower. But, it has lots of information. I can see just such a shower in my son and daughter-in-law’s future. ūüėČ

I will be posting more about babies and children in the future. But, I thought this was a great start.
