Using Essential Oils Safely

oil safe

Using dōTERRA essential oils have  provided amazing benefits for my familys and friends. When people try them for the first time  I have found that they ALWAYS go into this skeptical, but they return AMAZED at the benefits they are now experiencing. I love  that I am providing natural solutions to concerns or ways to make my home a place with less chemicals (cleaning products) for  my family.

As you begin to use essential oils you need to take the following precautions.

  • Keep oils out of the reach of children.
  • Use only 100% Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils.
  • Follow all label warnings and instructions.
  • Essential oils should not be used in the eyes, on open wounds or in the ear canal
  • Keep essential oils away from the eyes.  After applying oils, keep hands away from eyes.
  • Dilute oils when using on infants, young children and those with sensitive skin.
  • Do not use on a child’s hands as they may transfer oils to the eyes, additionally, cover a baby’s feet with socks after applying oils so they will not put their feet into their mouth.
  • Some oils are “hot” such as cassia, cinnamon and oregano.  Always use caution and dilute.
  • Many essential oils are just as effective when diluted down to 5%. I have a previous post about carrier oils and dilutions you can read.
  • If redness or irritation occurs when using topically, apply vegetable oil (olive, coconut or almond oil, etc) to the affected area.
  • Do NOT consume an essential oil internally unless the product is FDA approved as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). Many doTERRA oils may be used internally. Look at the bottle for this information if you  are not sure.
  • Avoid the sun after using citrus oils which cause sun sensitivity.
  • Consult with your physician before using essential oils,  particularly if you are pregnant or under a doctor’s care.
  • If pregnant, avoid most essential oils without doing further research.
  • Do your research if you even if you are not pregnant.  😉 Empower yourself!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Carrier Oils- Everything you wanted to know!

image

When you use an oil topically, you can use them neat (no dilution except for sensitive skin or with hot oils) and/or you can dilute with a carrier oil. You can also dilute any oil you that want to make it spread easier. I make lots of roller ball recipes to use at home.

What is a carrier oil? A carrier oil is named such because they “carry” an essential oi to the skin. Carrier oils refer to base oils that are used to dilute essential oils before applying them directly to your skin. Carrier oils are usually cold-pressed oils that are produced from fatty portions of a specific plant

Why use a carrier oil?  Carrier oils are used for so many reasons.  You might use a carrier oil in order to help you cover a large part of the body.  For example, if you are massaging your  legs,  you could add a few drops of  essential oil to the carrier oil in order to apply to the entire area easier.  Carrier oils are also used as a safety precaution they are very powerful.  When using EOs on someone with skin sensitivity or an infant or child, it is “essential”  to dilute them.  Carrier oils are also used tohelp the oils absorb more rapidly into the skin.

Some carrier oils  and some info on the oils are outlined below.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • Light
  • Doesn’t go rancid
  • Leaves no residue
  • Good for all skin types

Almond Oil

  • Soothes dry, irritated skin
  • Slightly Oily
  • Good for beauty and health recipes

Grapeseed Oil

  • Good for delicate skin types
  • Commonly used in cosmetics for its many benefits
  • Relatively odorless

Jojoba Oil

  • Closely resembles natural oils of skin
  • Waxy and relatively expensive
  • Non-greasy feelings
  • Relatively Odorless

Olive Oil

  • High in vitamin and mineral count
  • Excellent for hair
  • Heavy and oily
  • Strong Odor

Oils to Dilute

Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Oregano Thyme, and the followings need to be diluted for sensitive  skins, Bergamont, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Geranium Ginger, Lemongrass, Lime, Peppermint, and Wintergreen

Suggested Dilutions  or how much carrier oil do I need to use?  This all depends on your purpose.  I’ve read lots of research that indicates that an essential oil maintains its therapeutic benefits even when diluted down to 2%, 5%, or 10%.   The Modern Essentials guide to essential oils has a great chart that shows dilution ratios.  These are very  light dilutions.  Remember, it’s o.k. to dilute at a much heavier ratio.  In fact, it can be safer and more effective.  I say….dilute!

Infants are not listed on the chart but it is recommended that one drop of essential per Tablespoon of carrier be used.

ME-oil-dilution-chart

Here is another chart with heavier dilutions.

Here is a link to a chart that shows some of the oils and how they are used.

What happens if I burn myself or get an EO in my eye?  Use your carrier oil.  If you apply an oil and it starts to tingle, just add  ;ittle carrier oil.  You will find that it immediately takes away the tingle or burn.   If an oil gets in the eye, you can also use your carrier oil around the eye area.   I speak from experience, it helps.   Trust me, my grandson got some in his eye!! Not fun, but this worked. DO NOT USE WATER!!!!!!  Diluting or trying to wash off an oil with water will not work.   Water will only drive it in further as oil and water and oils do not mix.

So, there you have it.  Everything you wanted to know about carrier oils but were afraid to ask.

Do you use a carrier oil?  Tell me, what is your favorite?

Using essential oils have impacted my life in such a positive way. If you have been wanting to try oils, NOW IS THE TIME. I use them to soothe minor skin irritations, to ease occasional indigestion or nausea. They promote respiratory  health (my son swears by this one) and use them as a powerful cleansing agent. I could go on and one and if you join my team, I will provide regular training information on all these oils are GREAT for.

I will be here to provide training to you and if you sign up for the Home Essentials Kit or above I will also provide you with a Modern Essentials Book. This book I have found to be “essential” in the many ways to use essential oils for my families’ well being.

Diaperbag Makeover with dōTERRA Essential Oils

diaper 2

I am a Nanna to 4 beautiful grandchildren (soon to be 5 in September) so this is a topic near and dear to my heart. How wonderful to have a choice of natural products to use on your baby. I am including a link to the  dōTERRA page for your review.

http://www.doterratools.com/documents/Makeover_My_Diaper_Bag.pdf

There are recipies for three items to use at home and in your diaper bag for your baby or grandbaby.

  1. Diaper Cream – This  recipe is free from petroleum and artificial ingredients that can further irritate skin. –
  2. Talc Free Baby Powder – Your baby’s skin is delicate and very sensitive to chemicals that could be irritating. This safe and effective talc-free baby powder will make your baby’s skin soft, dry, and smooth.
  3. Homemade Baby Wipes  – Commercial wipes are made with ingredients that can irritate a baby’s delicate skin. This easy recipe is great on the go, just place wipes in a wet bag

Homemade Diaper Cream:

What are essential oils?

I have copied this information from doTERRA to help explain what essential oils are.  http://www.doterra.com/sgen/essentialDefinition.php  There is more information on this site should you decide to go to this link telling about essential oils throughout history for example.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends toward more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications.

dōTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils represent the safest, purest, and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize the superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade dōTERRA essential oils.

Why do I use essential oils? And other random stuff.

I am new to blogging and still a little unsure of what I am doing! However, I know I want to share what essential oil use has meant for me. I did a lot of reading and researching on essential oil uses prior to making my decision. My choice was to go with doTERRA. I can not say enough how much I value this company and the benefits they bring to my family. My medicine cabinet has been purged as well as cleaning products. I do it all with oils now. Over time, I plan to share natural solutions for your family’s well-being and natural cleaning products for your home.

I am about to be a Nanna again (YAY) and I am looking into diaper cream for babies, talc free powder and more. There is a diaper bag makeover I will share in the next few days too.

Essential Oils, by doTERRA, can be used three ways, aromatically, topically (typically with a carrier oil) or some can be used internally. I can’t wait to share different uses and how they have helped me.

The first oil I used was Serenity. My oldest grandson (Ethan) lives with us and we both can not sleep well. WOW is all I can say after using it the first night. The next morning we woke, up looked at each other and said the same thing, at the same time!! “I feel rested!” Ethan is becoming quite the expert on which oil to use for what concern he has! He is only 13 and is learning how to seek natural solutions for his health!!

I grew up in a small farming town and when we were sick my grandmother would go outside and bring in some bark, herbs or something else and make something for me to drink, rub on, etc. I always got better. I see this as getting back to basics.

Now, my husband, Jeff has not embraced this as quickly as Ethan and I have. He calls them my “witch oils”. But, on an almost daily basis now, he comes to me with a concern and asks if I have an oil for that and I always do. He keeps some roller balls and other oils in his truck and golf bag now. He still says he is not sure, but he can not argue with the results he is getting.

I hope as you join me you have patience as I learn to blog and share parts of my day with you. Some blogs will be about my family, my friends and our adventures, how I am eating gluten free (I have a severe gluten allergy) and life in general.

Let’s learn together and through this all I will share my growing knowledge and love of essential oils. You can contact me at eessentiallynanna@gmail.com  I would love to help you learn to explore natural solutions for your family and for your home.

We are expecting snow and ice here in Georgia over the next two days. I don’t like the cold. I am in front of the fire, nervous about publishing this for the first time.

Talk more soon!
